The Richterscale:
This is a scale that shows how big and destructive an earthquake can be. There are very big differences between the different 'steps' on the scale. From 1 til 2 it's ten times more destructive and from 1 til 3 it's even 100 times worse. Each step is ten times worse than the last one.
An earthquake at 2,0 on the Richterscale one does not feel, while one at 8,0 can be very destructive in an area of 1,5-2 miles.
The biggest registered eartquake was in Valdiva 1960, at the Richterscale it measured up to 9,5.
The INES:
INES is a short for International Nuclear Event Scale. It's a scale from 0 to 7. The steps on the scale shows if the accident had any influence on the safety, if there have been any radioactive releases to the environment or in the plant. Both Fukushima and Tjernobyl where a 7 on the scale.
The biggest nuclear happening in Sweden was a 2 on the scale, it was nothing serious it was just a problem with the safetysystem.
